1-) Tell us a little bit about your beginning in music. What about the first challenges? And who are your first influences?
I started playing when I was about 7 years old. I don’t remember having any difficulties playing the guitar…perhaps I have just forgotten because it was 51 years ago…as long as I can remember I could play the guitar. In the early days I was influenced by the Beatles, John Mayall and Jimmy Hendrix and many others.

Jimmy Hendrix e muitos outros.

2-) Nowadays, in your free time what have you been studying? And what kind of music have you been listening?
There isn’t much spare time these days. I spend lots of time writing music and I also love to improvise so I practice chord changes from my songs or standards or whatever I feel like improvising over. I’m working on rhythms and time and displaced rhythms for fun. I’m really into songwriting at the moment so I’m listening to songs from Beatles, Sting, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ivan Lins, Pino Daniele, Chris Thile, really broadening my pallete these days.

Ultimamente tenho me concentrado em escrever música!

3-) About Brazilian music! We know that your music brings us countless musical languages! Including some Brazilian elements! Could you mention some Brazilian musicians that you've played or who were your influences? And specifically about the guitar players, any name that comes to your mind? Any plans for a new tour here in Brazil?
I love Brazilian music. Hermeto Pascoal, Ivan Lins are my two favourites. Of course Jobim too when I’m feeling mellow! I really like Cacau Santos. I would love to tour Brazil again soon. No plan at the moment. Perhaps in 2018 when the new Soulmine album “Salve” is out.

4-) About your gear! What do you use in studios and stages? Have many differences between both situations?
I’ve been using my Kiesel FG-1 guitars and also the Cort Frank Gambale Luxe acoustic both live and in the studio. On my new Soulmine album “Salve” I recorded everything direct through the DV Mark MultiampFG and it sounds amazing. It’s the first time I’ve recorded an album without using my speaker cabs. Live I use the MultiampFG plus two DV Mark 212FG speakers. I keep it simple. The MultiampFG has power amp, preamps and effects all built in. I love having everything in one place and just switch programs with a midi foot controller and I use a Roland FV500 volume pedal for expression after the preamp. That’s it..

5-) You are well known for being one of the greatest guitar teachers in the world! Having developed materials and being present all over the world doing clinics and workshops! In your view, what is the importance of musical study in personal and professional musician’s development?
Knowledge is power I always say. There’s nothing wrong with being a smart, intelligent, educated musician. I’m a very strong advocate for Harmony & Theory…In fact I just finished an 18-hour video course called Harmony & Theory for my new online guitar school (http://www.frankgambaleonlineguitarschool.com) which will be released in the next month or so. I love to educate to the best of my ability. I want to help to raise the level of guitarists by offering ways to understand music in a methodical and easy to follow way. To improve yourself through diligent study of Harmony and Theory and transcription and listening and practicing is nothing but a BIG positive in my opinion.

6-) Nowadays we have internet and software computers working so close to the professional music. What do you think about it? And how it helps us to spread our works?
To me it’s a double-edged sword. On one side the internet is great for artists to reach directly to their fans and to seek out fans through social media. On the other hand, easy access also means it’s easy to download music for free through file sharing sites. Musicians ultimately need to be paid for their work. Same is true of books and movies these days. Tighter control over copyright material is critical for the future of our industry. Streaming services such as Spotify are considered a bright light by the industry because it is growing while CD and downloading sales a way down. The problem is Spotify (among others) pay roughly .000006 cents per play of a song. It seems quite ridiculous really when Spotify just passed the 50 million subscribers mark. With 50 million people paying $10 a month that’s $500,000,000 (500 million) a month these guys are making….and they can’t pay musicians a fair rate for our music??? These folks are ripping us off hand over fist. Only one album of mine is available on Spotify and it’s an album I don’t own the masters. Ironically, I just read a news item on the BBC news website that there’s software available now for people to hack Spotify. This makes me really happy because they have been getting away with murder and I for one, will be happy to see them go bankrupt! Musicians are constantly exploited.

7-) In your songs, solos and improvisations it’s common the use of arpeggios and sweep picking and it really sounds great! We know that you are one of the precursors of this technique and spent many years researching this! In your view, how important is the use of arpeggios in jazz and in many different harmonies?
Firstly, I’m the originator of the Sweep Picking method. I was the first person to write a book and do a video on the subject in the mid 80s and I am it’s main proponent. Everything I have ever seen written on the Sweep Picking subject is derivative of my work on the subject. I have developed it to a high art form and nobody else plays the way that I do. I have also developed a great many news applications for Sweep Picking which is why I recently released “The Definitive Sweep Picking Course” a 10-hour video course at my online guitar school. It updated and includes the fundaments plus all the new developments over the last 30 years since I did the original works.
I think it’s a big generalization to talk about only the arpeggios in jazz or in my music. Sweep Picking is basically a method that uses the pick to go the same direction across strings every time with the same picking direction. So the last note on a string is always going in the direction of the line. This can be over 2, 3, 5, or 6 strings. Arpeggios are important of course, they are a beautiful musical tool, but you could say the same about triads, intervals or pentatonics or chromaticism. They are all important tools.

8-) What was the greatest moment in your career that you could remember? Or the greatest concert?
There’s been lots. In 2011 I was on tour with Return To Forever in Australia and we played at the iconic Sydney Opera House to a sold out show of 5000 people. My family was in the 9th row. For a kid who grew up in Australia I remember as a child the Opera House being built and it has been a symbol of Australia ever since. Well, it was an incredible and emotional highlight for me to return to my  country of origin, my homeland and play at the Sydney Opera House to a sold out show with my family present.
Some other memorable ones are some of the most recent. My group Soulmine played some shows in Europe in October this year and it was about as joyful as music can be to be performing music from my next Soulmine album which comes out early 2018. It’s called “Salve” and it’s my best album to date. To be out playing this music with my band at these festivals was an absolute natural high!!

9-) What good advice would could you give to young guitar players who are studying music and who wants to make this their profession?
Study, focus on self-improvement. Learn all you can about music and learn all styles. Be the best musician you can be. If you’re a great player with a great sound and you’re a reliable fun person…people will come to you and want to play with YOU!

10-) In your opinion what is indispensable to be good musician?
Get along well with others, take regular showers, have a great sound, be punctual, have a good car, be prepared, study music, be the best player you can be and play your ass off!

11-) To finish, we would like to thank you so much for this interview! And ask you to give a short message for your fans, Guitar Tech’s readers and all Brazilians guitar players.
